Northern Ireland - Bulgaria 0:1
Bulgaria recorded a minimal 1:0 victory against Northern Ireland on Windsor Park Stadium in Belfast on Wednesday night. The game was a friendly match in which the teams that both came short of qualifying for Euro 2008 wanted to test their skills before the World Cup qualification process begins. The only goal in the match was scored by Manchester City striker Martin Petrov in the 38th minute.
Thus, the old new coach Plamen Markov, who is again in charge of the Bulgarian national team after replacing Dimitar Penev last month, started his new term with a victory.
Markov had chosen a 4-5-1 formation for his team, counting primarily on Tottenham top striker Dimitar Berbatov to terrorise Irish defenders.
At Windsor Park, Bulgaria played without Aston Villa midfielder Stilian Petrov, who has picked up a concussion in his club's last match against Fulham, and Manchester City striker Valery Bojinov, who is still recovering from a knee injury.
Bulgaria was said to be a favourite in the match but despite its victory it failed to demonstrate decisive superiority over the active Irish players.
