19.09.2002 - Blackburn Rovers - CSKA Sofia 1:1
© BBC CSKA managed to get an excellent 1:1 draw away to Premiership side Blackburn Rovers and now looks forward for the return leg in Sofia, with very real chances for progressing through to the next round. The reds tried to play as equal to tehir opponents at Ewood Park and didn't start off in total defense. Instead the Stoicho Mladenov players often threatened on the counter attack. In the 23rd minute they got the so vital for them away goal, thanks to Velizar Dimitrov, who finished off a good run into the penalty area, following a pass by Tomash. Just minutes later though Blackburn equalized. Towards the end of the match Blackburn started to exert more pressure, and things were made even more difficult for CSKA since Aleksandar Tomash was sent off for a second bookable offence 15 minutes from the end. Despite that, the reds managed to endure the great pressure on them, and held on to the draw.

19.09.2002 - Levski Sofia - Brondby 4:1
© EPA Levski (Sofia) achieved a convincing 4:1 win against Danish side Brondby and all but secured their UEFA Cup 2nd round spot, before the return leg in Denmark. The continued their spirited play from their tie against Dinamo (Kiev) and started to attack from the first whistle. Soon Simonovic opened the score after he was superbly set up by Chilikov. The Danish looked like they can put up a fight briefly, after equalizing through Madsen. Levski though didn't let this affect their play and managed to get in a second goal before the end of the half, once again by Simonovic. After once again going in front they never really looked back and with two goals by Telkiiski in the second half all but decided the whole tie even before the second match.

© BTA Liteks (Lovech) where the only Bulgarian representative in the European competitions that disappointed with its performance. After a heartless and defensive 90 minutes they lost out to Greek side Panathinaikos after an own goal by Jelenkovic in the 72nd minute. Liteks were powerless upfront, with forward Claudio Graf wasting the little chances created by his teammates. Only towards the end, with the entering of play by Desislav Rusev and injured Hristo Iovov Liteks posed a bit of threat, but to no avail. Following this dismal performance, and obviously affected by the bad championship form of Liteks too, the executives at the club fired the two team managers - Dimitar Penev and Tsvetan Zelenski for bad selection, as well as two players Dede and Graf.

07.09.2002 - Euro 2004 qual: Belgium - Bulgaria 0:2
Bulgaria kicked off their Euro 2004 qualification campaign with a good away win over one of our main rivals in the qualification group 8 - Belgium this evening. Our team showed a good performance throught the match and during most of the time were in control of the play. The goals - one in each half - came after two quick counter attacks, which where the main weapon of Plamen Markov's squad this evening. The first goal was scored by naturalized Serbian Zoran Yankovic in the 17th minute, after he outpositioned the Belgium defense and got at the end of a cross by Martin Petrov from the left flank. The second goal was courtesy fo Stilyan Petrov, it came after another Bulgarian counter attack was stopped with a foul just outside the Belgium penalty area.Following a combination from the free kick the ball was passed to Stilyan, whose fierce shot deflected off a Belgium defender and left the keeper of the home side helpless. Bulgaria's ween could have been classic, if after another quick counterattack at the end of the 1st half, a shot by Georgi Peev, hadn't met the crossbar behind the Belgium keeper.
The other result in the group from this evening is also favourable for our team, since our other main rival - Croatia recorded a surprising home draw against Estonia. Our next home is at home, at the "Vasil Levski" stadium in Sofia, against Croatia in October.
