Kaiserslautern during a friendly soccer match in Homburg June 1.
Bulgaria beat German champions Kaiserslautern 4-0 in a low-key World Cup
warmup on Monday. Two goals by midfielder Ilian Iliev sandwiched between
an Oliver Schaefer own goal gave the Bulgarians a comfortable lead before
Emil Kostadinov completed the scoring late in the game. Iliev's goals came
in the 26th and 52nd minutes. Schaefer put the ball into his own net in the
35th minute and former Bayern Munich striker Kostadinov scored eight minutes
from time. Bulgaria, World Cup semifinalists in
1994, looked well short of their best against Kaiserslautern. The Bundesliga
champions fielded only four of their first team players for the friendly
watched by a crowd of 4,000. Bulgaria will play
against Algeria another soccer match (this Friday, June 5) before the team
gets to the World Cup Finals in France. The Bulgarians will play in Group D
along with Paraguay, Nigeria and Spain.
